This Punjabi Language Primer has been developed for people who know English and would like to learn to read and write the Gurmukhi script. The primer has two parts. The first part helps learn to identify Gurmukhi alphabet and explains the sound each alphabet represents. Each page in this part is illustrated with a picture that helps to relate the letter to an image and also helps build the vocabulary of the reader. Each page also gives detailed writing strokes that will assist in learning the art of writing the Gurmukhi script.
The second part takes the learner beyond the basic alphabet. This part concentrates on the vowel diacritics (Laga Matra), and their use in simple every day Punjabi words. The focus of this part is to help learn the art of reading simple Punjabi text and develop basic vocabulary that is used in and around the house.
The primer can be used as a tool to learn the language on your own. It will be a great help to people who already speak and understand the language but need to learn to identify the alphabet and start reading Punjabi text on their own.
The primary reason for compiling this primer has been to make it available to as many people as can be possible. Though there would be people who would like to read the printed version as it is not always convenient to read it on a computer; the printed version will not be available at this stage. The author has granted rights to Asian Book Center to distribute the pdf version of this primer to interested people who register themselves as customers with www.asianbookcenter.com with an appeal to donate any amount that they feel reflects the value of this product. This would be a token of recognition of considerable hours that were spent in designing and editing this primer. The author would use the funds collected from donations to one day get it printed and distribute to people who may not be able to use it in the electronic form.
