About Ariel Durant

Ariel Durant, a Russian-born American researcher and writer, is best known as the co-author of The Story of Civilization with her husband Will Durant. Born as Chaya Kaufman in Proskurov, Russian Empire (now Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine) to Jewish parents Ethel Appel Kaufman and Joseph Kaufman, she immigrated to the United States in 1901. Ariel met her future husband while attending Ferrer Modern School in New York City, where Will was a teacher. They married in 1913 when Ariel was just fifteen years old. Together, they were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 1968 for their work on Rousseau and Revolution, the tenth volume of The Story of Civilization. In 1977, they received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Gerald Ford, and Ariel was honored as “Woman of the Year” by the city of Los Angeles. After passing away within two weeks of each other in 1981, Ariel and Will Durant were laid to rest at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
